On Friday 17th June Geoff Miller boarded a train from Chesterfield, his destination Ely. Geoff was originally booked to speak in June 2020, but sadly Covid put a stop to that. In true Geoff form he stuck to his word and turned up at the Ely City Golf Club on the hottest day of the year to entertain 60 guests.
SportsAid recipient, Joe Roper, goalball player from March, was accompanied by his blind grandfather, Francis. We were expecting guide dog Teddy, however, with the weather forecast hot, hot, hot he was left at home in the cool.
Ian Peck, MC for the day, welcomed all to the lunch, thanking sponsors; Grovemere Property; Cheffins; Ashtons Legal and PEM for their support, without which the event would not be possible.
Joe was invited to the floor and explained to guests how his brother, 6 years older than him, encouraged him to have a go at goalball, a sport that had transformed his life. Joe joined the University of Worcester the following year and that’s when his love of goalball began. Joe explained the rules of the game to guests and how physically demanding it can be. He talked about the costs of competing at GB level and how important an award from SportsAid was to him. Geoff presented Joe with a cheque for £1000 – funds raised by the Ely SportsAid Lunch Club.
After a delicious 2 course meal, thanks to the Ely Golf Club catering team, Geoff took the stage and enthralled guests with his cricketing stories. Facing Michael Holding without a helmet wouldn’t be your number one choice of bowler on a cold wet morning in April especially in front of the Yorkshire barmy army!
Geoff never fails to entertain; he is a great supporter of SportsAid and we are always grateful when he fits one of our lunches into his busy life. Thank you, Geoff.
The afternoon was topped off with a guest bidding a top price for a signed cricket bat, donated by Geoff, the proceeds will go to support Joe Roper.
Thank again to Grovemere Property; Ashtons Legal, PEM and Cheffins for their support.
